India Caps Mobile Connections at Nine, Orders Real-Time Checks
New SIM Rules Take Effect Across India; DoT Caps Mobile Connections At 9 Per Person, Orders Real-Time Checks By November 2026 · freepressjournal.in

India has introduced rules limiting how many mobile connections one person can have.

In most of the country, the limit is nine SIM cards.

In Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, and the North-East, the limit is six.

Phone companies must check whether a customer has already reached the limit.

At first, these checks may happen after a new SIM card is activated.

A connection found to be over the limit can then be suspended.

By November 30, 2026, operators must check before activating a new connection.

The Department of Telecommunications will also provide subscriber images through a government platform to help identify people applying for extra SIM cards.

Customers must declare the connections already registered in their name.
