Tamil Nadu to Impose Rs 20 Environmental Cess on Liquor
The state government of Tamil Nadu wants to add a small extra fee to every bottle of alcohol that people buy.

The money would be used to take care of the environment and help people.
Discarded liquor bottles and packaging can become litter in forests and hurt wildlife.

The Tamil Nadu government has proposed a new environmental and social welfare cess of up to Rs 20 on every unit container of liquor sold for human consumption.
The levy is part of the Tamil Nadu Value Added Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2026, introduced by Commercial Taxes and Registration Minister D Logesh Tamilselvan.
The cess will be charged in addition to the existing VAT under a new Section 3-A of the Tamil Nadu Value Added Tax Act, 2006.
Revenues are earmarked for recycling and safe disposal of liquor containers, de-addiction programmes, and welfare for families affected by alcohol dependency.
The levy will come into effect from a date to be separately notified by the government after the legislative process is completed.
