Sarma pays tribute to Ahom martyrs of the Battle of Alaboi
A very long time ago, in 1669, brave soldiers called Ahom warriors fought to protect their home in Assam from another powerful army called the Mughals.
On August 5, ten thousand of these warriors charged into battle against fierce Mughal soldiers on horseback.
They knew they were outnumbered and might not survive.
But they chose to fight anyway because they loved their homeland.
Sadly, all ten thousand warriors died that day.
Over 350 years later, people in Assam still remember them as heroes.
The leader of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, said their courage is like the heartbeat of freedom.
He said the battle was a very important moment in Assam's history.
The warriors' sacrifice helped Assam win a big victory in another battle in 1671.
That is why, every year, people in Assam remember these heroes and honour them.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma paid tribute to the martyrs of the historic Battle of Alaboi (Alaboi Ron) on Wednesday.
The battle took place on August 5, 1669, when around 10,000 Ahom warriors laid down their lives fighting the Mughal cavalry.
In a post on X, Sarma wrote that the warriors chose death over dishonour and called Alaboi Ron "the heartbeat of our freedom."
The battle was fought on plains near present-day Guwahati during the Ahom-Mughal struggle for control of the Brahmaputra Valley.
Historians view the sacrifice as a turning point that led to the decisive Battle of Saraighat in 1671, where Lachit Borphukan defeated the Mughals.
