Telangana Assembly Passes Bill for Transgender Municipal Representation

Telangana’s Assembly passed a new bill about local government.

The bill would allow transgender people to join some municipal corporations as co-opted members.

One transgender person would be nominated in each of nine corporations.

These corporations are outside the Core Urban Region of Hyderabad.

The members could take part in municipal administration and decisions.

The government said this would give transgender people more representation.

It also said the measure could help people who face discrimination and marginalization.

Several political parties supported the bill.

The bill changes the Telangana Municipalities Act, 2019.
