Tamil Nadu recorded fewer reported crimes against women in the first seven months of 2026 than in the same period of 2025.

Reported rape and attempted-rape cases fell from 387 to 236.

Cases involving children under the POCSO law also dropped sharply, from 9,813 to 6,491.

Kidnapping and abduction cases decreased from 178 to 71.

Complaints about dowry deaths and cruelty by husbands or relatives also declined.

Police statistics describe this as a downward trend in serious crimes against women.

However, many 2026 cases were still being investigated rather than chargesheeted.

For example, 90 of the 236 rape cases had reached the chargesheet stage.

The figures cover only January through July and cannot be directly compared with full-year totals.
