Mumbai Dowry Harassment Cases Rise While Deaths Decline

Mumbai Police recorded more complaints about married women being harassed over dowry in the first half of 2026.

There were 260 such cases, compared with 246 during the same period in 2025.

This was a rise of 14 cases.

However, fewer dowry-related suicides were reported this year.

Dowry deaths also fell from three cases to one.

Police solved two of the three dowry-linked suicide cases recorded in 2026.

No dowry-related murders were registered in either year’s first half.

Other harassment cases involving married women also decreased.

The data shows that some serious outcomes declined even while dowry-harassment complaints increased.
