Only 84 highway wayside amenities have EV charging stations
Electric cars need special places to plug in and recharge, just like a phone needs a charger.
On big Indian highways, there are rest stops called wayside amenities where drivers can stop for food, water, and fuel.
The government counted how many of these stops have chargers for electric cars.
They found only 84 stops across the whole country have working chargers.
That is a very small number because highways are long and many cars use them.
Most of these charging stops are in just two states, Rajasthan and Haryana.
The government wants drivers to feel safe taking electric cars on long trips.
Having more charging stations on highways helps electric cars travel farther.
Right now, many states have only one or two such charging stops, so there is still a lot of work to do.
Only 84 wayside amenities on India's national highways have operational EV charging stations, according to government data tabled in the Rajya Sabha.
More than half of the facilities are concentrated in just two states — Rajasthan with 20 and Haryana with 18.
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari shared the state-wise breakdown in a written reply to an unstarred question in the Rajya Sabha.
83 of the 84 operational sites had come up by the end of 2025-26, with one additional facility commissioned so far in the current financial year 2026-27.
The wayside amenities, spaced 40 to 60 km apart and developed through National Highways Logistics Management Limited, are meant to offer eateries, toilets, drinking water, parking, fuel stations, medical aid and accommodation.
