Farmers Continue High Fertiliser Use Despite Modi's Appeal
Farmers in India are buying a lot of fertiliser, more than the government thought they would need.
Even though the Prime Minister asked them to use less, sales of urea, DAP, MOP, and NPKS are still high.
The government keeps track of how much farmers buy using special machines that link to their Aadhaar cards.
The data shows that farmers in states like Haryana are buying 20‑60 % more than the government’s estimate.
This means the farmers are not following the Prime Minister’s request to cut fertiliser use.
Urea sales already at 94.78 LMT, 87 % of the season’s 109.40 LMT requirement, with two months of Kharif season left.
DAP, MOP, and NPKS sales also ahead of government estimates, showing no drop after Modi’s 25‑50 % cut appeal.
Availability of all major fertilisers remains high: 163.78 LMT urea, 31.57 LMT DAP, 10.06 MOP, 48.48 NPKS.
State data shows several states (e.g., Haryana, Himachal Pradesh) buying 20‑60 % more than their estimated needs.
DBT sales captured via Aadhaar‑linked PoS confirm farmers are buying more than the government’s own requirement estimates.
