Chinu Kwatra’s Nine-Year Beach Cleanup Movement Invites Mumbai Volunteers
Chinu Kwatra started cleaning Mumbai’s beaches after seeing festival waste left behind in 2017.
About 12 people joined his first cleanup.
More people later joined after seeing the volunteers working.
The effort grew into a group called Beach Warriors.
The group now cleans four Mumbai beaches every Saturday.
Volunteers collect plastic and other waste that could otherwise reach the ocean.
Some of the plastic is recycled into useful items such as school benches.
The Better India is asking people to join a cleanup at Dadar Beach on 26 September 2026.
Chinu Kwatra began organizing beach cleanups after finding post-Ganpati waste at Dadar Beach in September 2017.
His Beach Warriors movement has conducted more than 2,000 cleanups across over 450 weeks and four Mumbai beaches.
The campaign estimates it has reached more than one million people, while volunteers say over 4,000 tonnes of waste were kept from the ocean.
Collected beach plastic is washed, sorted and processed into sheets, granules, dustbins and benches.
The Better India is inviting volunteers to a cleanup at Dadar Beach on 26 September 2026 at 8 am.
