CBI Arrests Railway Engineer in ₹15 Lakh Bribery Case
Some people who work for the railway were in charge of a very big project to make train signals work all by themselves.
A group of two companies did the work and asked for a big bonus because they finished early.
The police, called the CBI, heard that railway workers changed some dates on paperwork to help the company get the bonus.
The company's boss told the railway worker that his son would deliver money to him while travelling from Visakhapatnam to Vijayawada.
The police set a trap and caught the railway worker taking the money.
They arrested the worker and the boss's son.
The police are now searching homes and offices in a few cities.
The arrested people will be brought to court on Monday.
Taking money like that is called a bribe, and it is against the law.
The CBI arrested Senior Section Engineer Bapiraju of CSTE Projects, South Central Railway, Vijayawada, and Srichand, son of Yella Constructions' managing director, in an alleged ₹15 lakh bribery case on Sunday.
A joint venture of Ganapathi Engineering Works and Yella Constructions was awarded automatic block signalling work worth ₹179.50 crore by South Central Railway and claimed a bonus of about ₹7 crore for finishing early.
The CBI alleged CSTE Projects officials manipulated or altered dates in the bonus file to extend undue favour to the joint venture and facilitate approval of its bonus claim.
The CBI laid a trap and caught the engineer red-handed while accepting ₹15 lakh from Srichand as a reward for sanctioning and releasing the bonus amount.
Searches are being conducted at premises in Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Pithapuram and Hyderabad, and the two accused will be produced before the Special CBI Court at Vijayawada on Monday.
