Labour minister vows to restore construction workers' welfare benefits
A minister in Andhra Pradesh named Vasamsetti Subhash said the government wants to bring back benefits for construction workers.
Construction workers are people who build houses, roads, and other buildings.
A few years ago, the state had about 15 lakh registered construction workers.
Then the registration stopped because the old government ended the welfare programs.
In 2024, a new government led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu came to power.
This new government brought the welfare programs back.
In the last two months, 6,777 new workers signed up.
Workers who build roads for more than 90 days and workers in mines can also register.
Workers can sign up using an app called 'Mana Mithra'.
The minister also said the old government did not spend money that was meant for teaching workers new skills.
Labour minister Vasamsetti Subhash said the coalition government is committed to restoring welfare benefits for construction workers in Andhra Pradesh.
Andhra Pradesh had around 15 lakh registered construction workers in 2018-19, but registration halted after the previous government discontinued welfare schemes through Memo No. 1214.
The TDP-led coalition government headed by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu revived the schemes after assuming office in 2024, with 6,777 workers newly registered in the past two months.
Eligible workers include those in road construction employed for more than 90 days and mining sector workers, with registration available through the 'Mana Mithra' app.
The minister alleged the previous YSRCP government failed to spend the stipulated 10 per cent of construction cess on skill development between 2019 and 2024 and diverted the funds.
