Chennai Opens Animal Birth-Control Centre and Two Cattle Shelters
Chennai has opened a centre to help control stray dogs and treat pets.
It has kennels, treatment rooms and an operating theatre.
Doctors can perform up to 20 surgeries there each day.
The city also opened two shelters for stray cattle.
Together, the new shelters can hold 220 cattle.
The Greater Chennai Corporation already runs 12 dog birth-control centres.
It is also building more cattle shelters and using vehicles and workers to catch cattle found on roads.
These projects are meant to make streets safer and provide better care for animals.
The Greater Chennai Corporation opened an animal birth-control and pet treatment centre and two cattle shelters in Perungudi zone.
The facilities were inaugurated by Animal Husbandry Minister S. Kamali and built at a combined cost of Rs. 6.45 crore.
The dog centre has 100 kennels, 50 rooms and capacity for up to 20 surgeries daily.
The two cattle shelters can accommodate 100 and 120 cattle, respectively, and include treatment and fodder-storage facilities.
The Corporation operates 12 dog birth-control centres and is developing cattle shelters with capacity for about 2,000 animals across 18 locations.
