Chennai has opened a new centre to help care for dogs.

The centre cost Rs 7.87 crore to build.

It has a veterinary hospital, operation theatres, a pharmacy and rooms for recovering animals.

Workers currently sterilise about 200 stray dogs each day.

The new centre and three others being built could increase this to 350-400 surgeries daily.

Chennai also has several other Animal Birth Control centres.

Shelters are being built for dogs that have diseases.

Officials want all stray dogs and pets to receive rabies vaccinations and want pet licences to be issued faster.
