Kanpur is building a metro system with two main routes.

The whole first phase will cover about 32.4 kilometres and have 29 stations.

Trains already carry passengers between IIT Kanpur and Kanpur Central.

Government figures say about 80% of the project’s construction is complete.

A second route will run from Chandra Shekhar Azad Agricultural University to Barra-8.

Nine of the 10 trains needed for that route have arrived in Kanpur.

Tunnelling for the second route has also been completed.

Workers still need to finish construction, safety checks and other systems before the route can open.

The project was approved at a cost of about ₹11,076 crore.
