Kanpur Metro Reaches 80% Completion as Ninth Train Arrives
Kanpur is building a metro system with two main routes.
The whole first phase will cover about 32.4 kilometres and have 29 stations.
Trains already carry passengers between IIT Kanpur and Kanpur Central.
Government figures say about 80% of the project’s construction is complete.
A second route will run from Chandra Shekhar Azad Agricultural University to Barra-8.
Nine of the 10 trains needed for that route have arrived in Kanpur.
Tunnelling for the second route has also been completed.
Workers still need to finish construction, safety checks and other systems before the route can open.
The project was approved at a cost of about ₹11,076 crore.
The ninth of 10 Corridor-2 trains has reached Kanpur from Alstom’s Savli plant in Gujarat.
Kanpur Metro Phase-I is 80.45% physically complete and 78.5% financially complete, according to a February 2026 government update.
Passenger services currently operate from IIT Kanpur to Kanpur Central across about 15.1 to 16 kilometres and 14 stations.
Corridor-2, running 8.6 kilometres from Chandra Shekhar Azad Agricultural University to Barra-8, is still under construction.
The project’s original sanctioned cost is ₹11,076.48 crore, with Corridor-2 tunnelling reported complete by March 2026.
