Five South India Rail Corridors Set for Major Expansion
Railways plans to add tracks or double tracks on five routes in southern India.
These routes pass through Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
The work will cover about 540 kilometres.
It is expected to cost around Rs 10,021 crore.
More tracks should allow trains to move more smoothly and reduce delays caused by crowded lines.
The projects may also improve access to religious and tourist places such as Tirupati and Kodaikanal.
Railways expects the routes to carry more coal, steel, food, cars and other goods.
The projects are also expected to reduce oil use and carbon dioxide emissions.
Five railway corridors across four southern states will receive additional tracks or doubling.
The projects cover 540 kilometres and have an estimated combined cost of Rs 10,021 crore.
Work is planned for completion by 2029-30 under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan.
The upgrades are expected to improve mobility, reliability, connectivity and ease railway congestion.
The projects could support 47 MTPA of additional freight and reduce fuel use and emissions.
