Kallo is a woman who had to leave her home because the people around her were very angry with her.

She lives in a tiny, rusty shed with holes in the roof where she can peek at the stars.

Every Friday evening, a toothpowder seller comes to town with a drummer, and Kallo is his model.

She shows off her bright, white teeth so people will buy his powder, even though she hardly ever brushes them.

For this work, he gives her a handful of chickpeas and a few coins.

Kallo also does difficult jobs for her neighbours, like washing clothes, cleaning, and feeding animals, and gets only a meal or two in return.

One day, the narrator gives Kallo some leftover rice that had started to smell bad, and hungry Kallo eats it all happily.

The narrator also gives Kallo an old dress but later takes it back.

Kallo never complains and simply keeps going.
