Telangana Seeks Higher Tummidihatti Level for 80 TMC Gravity Flow
Pranahita talks may pave way for 80 TMC gravity flow to Sundilla: Uttam Kumar Reddy · thehansindia.com

Telangana wants to build a barrage at Tummidihatti on the Pranahita River.

A barrage helps control and direct river water.

The state hopes to send nearly 80 TMC of water to the Sundilla barrage.

Talks with Maharashtra are planned in New Delhi on September 1.

The meeting will consider a 150-metre reservoir level, while Telangana may seek approval for a 152-metre level.

An earlier Telangana government accepted a 148-metre level in 2016.

A taller barrage could allow water to flow naturally instead of requiring as much pumping.

However, the taller level could submerge more land in Maharashtra.

Quotes

N Uttam Kumar Reddy

Telangana Irrigation Minister

“Since submergence is involved at both levels, the previous government should have negotiated more effectively to secure Maharashtra’s consent for the technically advantageous 152-metre level. Telangana lost an important opportunity by agreeing to 148 metres without adequately safeguarding the State’s interests.”
