Cabinet Secretary Somanathan, Home Secretary Mohan Get One-Year Extension
Two very important helpers of the Indian government were allowed to keep their jobs for one more year.
The Cabinet Secretary is the top civil servant in the country, and the Home Secretary looks after internal security matters.
A special committee called the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet made the decision on Wednesday.
This committee is led by the Prime Minister.
T.V. Somanathan will continue as Cabinet Secretary beyond August 30, 2026.
Govind Mohan will continue as Union Home Secretary beyond August 22, 2026.
Special retirement rules had to be relaxed so Mohan could continue working past the usual retirement age.
Both officers are very experienced and have served in many important roles.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved one-year extensions for Cabinet Secretary T.V. Somanathan and Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan.
Somanathan, a 1987-batch IAS officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, will serve as Cabinet Secretary for one year beyond August 30, 2026.
Mohan, a 1989-batch IAS officer of the Sikkim cadre, will serve as Union Home Secretary for one year beyond August 22, 2026, until August 22, 2027.
Mohan's extension was granted by relaxing provisions of Fundamental Rule 56(d) and Rule 16(1A) of the All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958.
Somanathan took charge as Cabinet Secretary on August 30, 2024, succeeding Rajiv Gauba, while Mohan has served as Union Home Secretary since August 23, 2024.
