Personal Loans Outpace Home Loans as Credit Growth Accelerates
In the first three months of the 2026-27 financial year, new personal loans grew quickly.
Home loans are still much bigger overall, even though they grew a little more slowly.
Loans for consumer goods and two-wheelers also increased.
Experian says the overall share of late loan payments went down compared with a year earlier.
Personal loans are not used to buy an asset like a home, so borrowers should think carefully before taking one.
They should check whether the monthly payment fits with their other bills and debts.
The whole lending market grew by 18% during the quarter.
The report says both secured and unsecured lending continued to expand.
Personal-loan sourcing rose 32% year-on-year to ₹3 lakh crore in April-June 2026.
Personal-loan AUM reached ₹16.2 lakh crore in June 2026, up 14% year-on-year; home-loan AUM was ₹43.6 lakh crore, up 13%.
Consumer-durable loan AUM grew 37% year-on-year to ₹1.1 lakh crore, while two-wheeler loan sourcing rose 17%.
Industry net 30+ delinquency improved to 3% in June 2026 from 4.1% a year earlier; personal-loan delinquency was 2.3%.
Experian advises borrowers to weigh repayments against existing debts and monthly cash flow rather than borrow just because credit is accessible.
