Delhi CM calls 5 lakh Lakshmi Yojana registrations historic
The Delhi government has a program called Lakshmi Yojana to help women from families that do not have much money.
Every month, women who qualify can get 2,500 rupees.
In just one week, more than five lakh women signed up on the official website.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta says no government scheme has seen so many registrations so fast, and she called the response historic.
Most sign-ups came from North East Delhi, while fewer came from New Delhi.
The money can be kept as savings in a bank plan, or some of it can go into a digital wallet for daily needs.
The government says every application is checked carefully in four steps so that only eligible women receive the money.
The first payment is planned to be made on Raksha Bandhan.
Some other political parties, like Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party, say the rules might leave out many women who need help.
Over 5 lakh women registered on the Delhi Lakshmi Yojana portal within a week, which Chief Minister Rekha Gupta called 'historic'.
The scheme provides monthly financial assistance of Rs 2,500 to women from economically weaker sections.
North East district recorded the highest registrations at 73,676, while New Delhi district had the lowest at 5,573 among the 13 districts.
More than 2.18 lakh applications with all required documents have been finally submitted for approval.
