Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran to Exit After Nine-Year Tenure
There is a very big Indian group of companies called the Tata Group, and its boss was a man named N Chandrasekaran.
He worked at the company for 40 years and was the chairman for nine years.
He told the board of directors that he will stop being chairman in February 2027.
He would have liked to stay, and most of the board wanted to give him five more years.
But one important board member would not agree, so after six months of waiting, he decided it was time to leave.
That board member is Noel Tata, who leads the charity trusts that own most of the company.
Noel wanted clearer answers about the company's future plans, why some new businesses were losing money, and whether the company might one day be listed on the stock market.
Chandrasekaran made the group much bigger — it now earns more than 180 billion dollars a year and employs over one million people.
The group bought Air India and moved into planes, electronics, computer chips, batteries, and online shopping.
There were also hard times, like a plane crash in Ahmedabad in 2025, and now the group must find a new leader to fix the problems.
N Chandrasekaran will step down as Tata Sons chairman when his term ends on February 20, 2027, after a nine-year tenure.
His decision follows a six-month standoff over reappointment after one board member withheld unanimous support for a third term.
Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata had sought assurances on strategy, losses at newer businesses, and the potential listing of Tata Sons.
Under Chandrasekaran, Tata Group revenue crossed USD 180 billion in FY24-25, with more than one million employees and expansion into aviation, electronics, and semiconductors.
His tenure included the June 2025 Air India Boeing 787 crash in Ahmedabad and mounting losses at Air India and Tata Digital.
