KDMT Staff Absorption Drive Gains Momentum; August Hunger Strike Deferred
Workers at a city bus company called KDMT want to become full employees of the city government.
The city government is called KDMC, and it runs the Kalyan-Dombivli area.
The bus company may soon be joined with another company called KMPML.
The workers were worried that they might lose their jobs and benefits during this change.
So they planned a one-day hunger strike to show how serious they were.
A hunger strike means refusing to eat food to protest.
The city officials met with the workers and promised to look after their pay, pension and other benefits.
They even gave the workers a letter with their promises in writing.
Because of this, the workers agreed to wait and not go on strike, but they said they will protest again if the city does not keep its promise.
KDMT employee unions have temporarily deferred their one-day token hunger strike scheduled for August 13 after receiving written assurances from the KDMC administration.
Union leaders are demanding that KDMT employees be absorbed directly into the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) before the transport undertaking's services merge with KMPML.
On August 10, KDMT Transport Manager Dr Vijay Kumar Dwase met with the union and three employee organisations to discuss service benefits and staff status.
The administration assured employees of service-death gratuity under provisions applicable from 1982, application of civil service rules, and municipal grants covering salaries, gratuity, provident fund, leave encashment and pensions.
Union president Mahesh Patil and working president Anil Pandit warned that agitation would be intensified if the absorption demand is not addressed within the expected timeframe.
