Blackbucks Return to Banni as Kutch Grassland Restoration Expands
A big grassy place called Banni in Kutch is being helped to become healthy again.
It is very large, covering about 2,600 square kilometres.
To help it, twenty blackbucks, a kind of beautiful antelope, are moving to Banni from a zoo in Jamnagar.
Scientists got permission from the Central Zoo Authority to do this.
But the plan is not just about adding more animals.
It is about fixing the whole grassland, like a puzzle where every piece matters.
Grasslands need plants, plant-eating animals, predators, and birds that help clean up leftovers.
Special vehicles, mobile animal hospitals, and tracking tools will help the animals settle in.
Local herder families called Maldhari have lived there for generations, so they are part of the plan too.
By working together, people hope Banni can become a healthy home again.
Twenty blackbucks are being relocated from the Greens Zoological, Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre in Jamnagar to the Banni Grassland in Kutch, with approval from the Central Zoo Authority.
The effort aims to restore the entire 2,600 sq. km grassland ecosystem, not just increase wildlife numbers.
Restoring herbivores like blackbucks is intended to strengthen the ecological processes that keep the grassland functioning.
Vantara, in collaboration with the Gujarat Forest Department and GZRRC, is deploying wildlife transport, portable bomas, all-terrain mobility and a mobile wildlife medical unit.
The Maldhari communities, who have lived alongside and depended on Banni for generations, are seen as essential to any meaningful restoration model.
