Calcutta High Court cancels OBC certificates issued under TMC rules
Inside a big courtroom in India, the Calcutta High Court made an important decision.
It is about special certificates called OBC certificates.
These certificates give some people extra help with school admissions and jobs.
The certificates were given out by the earlier government of a state called West Bengal.
That government belonged to a political group called the Trinamool Congress, or TMC.
The certificates were given in two groups, named OBC-A and OBC-B.
Later, a new government, led by a group called the BJP, decided to remove those two groups.
The court then said that all these certificates were no longer valid.
It said the people holding them will now be treated like everyone else.
That means they will no longer get the special help.
The Calcutta High Court ordered the cancellation of all OBC certificates issued under revised rules introduced by the previous Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal.
Certificates were issued in the OBC-A and OBC-B categories from May 8 to June 12, 2025, based on a notification by the then state government.
A division bench of Justices Rajasekhar Mantha and Anuj Singh ruled that the certificates had lost their validity and stood cancelled.
The bench noted that the OBC-A and OBC-B classification no longer exists after the present BJP government abolished it.
Certificate holders in these categories will now be considered as general category.
