CHP’s Cafer Parlak elected acting mayor of Istanbul’s Eyüpsultan district

Eyüpsultan is a district of Istanbul, and its municipal council has elected Cafer Parlak of the CHP as acting mayor.

The election was held after Mayor Mithat Bülent Özmen was jailed in an investigation concerning the municipality and suspended from his duties.

The CHP nominated Parlak, while the AK Party nominated Muhammet Çakır.

The first three rounds did not produce a winner under the required voting thresholds.

In the fourth round, Parlak received 19 votes and Çakır received 16; two votes for Çakır were ruled invalid because of spelling errors.

The AK Party argued that the vote should have been decided in the third round and said it would file an objection.

The council meeting ended after objections were read, and the sources give no further details about what happens next.
