At least 13 people in Spain sickened by salmonella-tainted eggs

At least 13 people in Spain became ill with salmonella after eating contaminated eggs produced in Spain.

The affected batch was also distributed to Portugal and has been withdrawn from sale.

Spanish authorities notified the European Union’s food safety alert network, which classified the incident as serious.

The Spanish food safety agency has not released details about how ill the affected people are or how many eggs were withdrawn.

Salmonella infection can cause diarrhoea, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting and fever, usually starting within six to 72 hours.

Most healthy people recover within a few days, but complications can be serious for older people and those with underlying health conditions.

The withdrawal is intended to prevent further cases, and no other next steps are specified.
