São Paulo faces orange storm alert as cold front brings heavy rain

A new cold front is expected to bring storms to São Paulo state on Sunday, October 11.

Brazil’s National Institute of Meteorology issued an orange warning for São Paulo and nearby areas, as well as Mato Grosso do Sul, Goiás, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Paraná and Santa Catarina.

The warning says rain could reach 30 to 60 millimeters an hour, with winds of 60 to 100 kilometers an hour and possible hail.

These conditions could cause power cuts, crop damage, fallen trees and flooding.

In São Paulo, rain is expected to become stronger in the afternoon and continue into the evening, then ease; temperatures are forecast to range from 18°C to 28°C.

The cold front is part of a weather pattern that can bring more cold fronts into Brazil, and forecasters expect recurring periods of that pattern as El Niño strengthens.

That means the country’s south-central region could face further episodes of rain.
