Eritrea asks UN to act as tensions with Ethiopia rise over Tigray

Eritrea has asked the United Nations to take what it calls “deterrent measures” as tensions with Ethiopia rise over Tigray, a region in northern Ethiopia.

Eritrea says Ethiopia has declared war, while Ethiopia accuses Eritrean troops of invading its territory; Eritrea denies sending troops across the border.

Residents said Ethiopian government forces and allied militia had entered Adigrat, a city near the Eritrean border.

People there are facing shortages of food and medical care, according to residents.

The dispute comes after rebel Tigray forces attacked federal troops last month, and Ethiopia says Eritrea supports the rebels.

The countries fought a border war from 1998 to 2000, and Tigray was devastated by a 2020–2022 war.

Eritrea has asked the UN to act, but the account does not say what the UN will do next.
