Concern about safety in Italy has more than tripled since 2022
An Ipsos poll found that 35% of people in Italy now cite safety as a concern, up from 10% in October 2022.
Safety has risen from tenth to second place among the issues people name.
The poll also found that 46% feel little or not at all safe in their local area, while 54% feel fairly or very safe.
Common crime, youth gangs and urban decay are among the leading concerns, alongside immigration and gender-based violence.
Concerns vary by political leaning: irregular immigration is a bigger worry for centre-right voters, while gender-based violence ranks higher among opposition voters.
Overall, 64% say the government’s measures on safety have been of little or no effectiveness.
Views are almost evenly split between favouring tougher enforcement and prioritising prevention.
