Hurricane Simon prompts safety measures in western Mexico

Category 4 Hurricane Simon is moving toward Mexico’s western Pacific coast.

Authorities said it was near Manzanillo, Colima, and forecast to make landfall early Sunday between La Huerta and Tomatlán in Jalisco.

Red alerts cover Colima and Jalisco, while other alert levels are in place in nearby states.

Mexico’s president announced that non-essential activities would be suspended from 4 p.m.

Saturday in affected areas.

The Mexico City airport warned that some flights to Pacific destinations could be delayed or cancelled over the weekend.

Officials have urged people to take precautions as the storm approaches.

Tropical Storm Rachel is also moving toward Baja California and is expected to bring heavy rain and high waves.
