Plant diversity could help grasslands absorb more carbon as the climate changes
Grasslands absorb carbon dioxide, but different plants cope with heat, drought and disturbance in different ways.
A mix of species can help keep grasslands productive as conditions change.
The study’s model found that severe losses of plant diversity could reduce carbon uptake, especially in some tropical regions.
That matters because less plant growth can also mean less carbon stored in the soil.
