South Korean local governments’ future debt tops 58 trillion won

South Korea’s 243 local governments owe more than 58.4 trillion won in future debt.

That total grew much faster than their assets did in 2025.

More debt can leave local governments with less room in future budgets.

A lawmaker warned that people in future generations may bear the cost.
