Sixteen Ukrainian civilians evacuated from Russian-occupied areas
Sixteen Ukrainian civilians have been brought from Russian-occupied areas to government-controlled Ukraine.
They crossed at the Novi Yarylovychi checkpoint on the border with Belarus.
Among them was an elderly man with a disability who helped respond to the 1986 Chornobyl nuclear disaster.
He had been living in occupied Luhansk Oblast with his wife, who needed constant care after a severe stroke.
She died before arrangements to evacuate them were completed, so only her husband returned; their daughter was waiting in Kyiv.
The evacuation was organized by Ukrainian company MHP, with charities and the Red Cross helping returnees access medical care, housing and other support.
Ukraine’s ombudsman’s office says it continues to assess requests and coordinate routes for people seeking to leave occupied territory.
