Klaten Trains Merapi-Slope Residents for Emergency Evacuations
Klaten regency in Indonesia held an evacuation and rescue exercise in Balerante village and the Kalitalang ecotourism area.
The training was intended to help residents and volunteers respond to emergencies, including a possible eruption of Mount Merapi.
Balerante was badly affected by the 2010 eruption and is far from the local disaster agency’s office, making self-evacuation important.
Sixty people from disaster agencies, emergency services, the military, police and volunteer groups took part.
They practised evacuation and learned about routes, meeting points and how to coordinate their roles.
Geological disaster officials also handed Klaten’s regent an early-warning system with a siren and monitoring equipment, and the event included the designation of three disaster-ready villages.
The exercise was part of efforts to help people act quickly and safely when they receive a warning.
Klaten regency held an evacuation and rescue drill for residents and volunteers in areas near Mount Merapi.
The exercise took place in Balerante village and the Kalitalang Ecotourism area on Thursday, October 8.
It aimed to strengthen emergency readiness for a potential eruption and other emergencies in mountainous and forest areas.
The training involved 60 participants from disaster-response groups and public services.
Balerante was selected because it suffered extensive damage in the 2010 Merapi eruption and is far from the Klaten disaster agency office.

This story does not have two clearly opposing sides.
Our hope with this activity is that residents will be more alert, our volunteers will better understand how to respond to disasters, and we will know together what to do if a disaster occurs.
When the eruption occurred in 2010, Balerante suffered the most damage and its location is far from BPBD, so independent evacuation is needed.
