Two long-unsolved killings in Turkey lead to arrests

Authorities in Turkey say they have made progress in two killings that had remained unsolved for years.

The cases involve Rıza Güzel, who went missing in 2006 in Akpınar, Kırşehir province, and Arif Yılmaz, who was shot dead in 2013 in Çarşamba, Samsun province.

Investigators re-examined witness accounts, communication records and other evidence.

In Güzel’s case, they found bone fragments believed to be his after suspects gave statements and showed investigators where to look.

Seven people were detained across the two investigations, and four were jailed.

One suspect in the Kırşehir case was placed under judicial supervision.

The justice minister said the work to resolve unsolved cases will continue; authorities say 60 cases involving 67 victims and seven injured people have now been cleared.
