French lawmakers reject 2027 budget revenue plan in committee

Lawmakers in France’s National Assembly have rejected the revenue section of the government’s proposed 2027 state budget in committee.

The vote was nearly unanimous, with only Renaissance lawmakers supporting the amended version.

The budget aims to bring France’s public deficit to 5% of gross domestic product in 2027.

Disputes included proposed limits on a tax allowance for retirees and savings measures affecting local authorities.

The committee vote does not stop the bill immediately: it returns to the full Assembly on Tuesday, starting from the government’s original draft.

If lawmakers there reject the revenue section, the whole budget would be rejected without debate on spending.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has no majority, and may face lengthy negotiations or seek to pass the budget using special constitutional or budget procedures.
