European markets face pressure as French stocks fall 12% from August peak

European markets are under pressure as government bond yields and risk premiums rise.

France is a particular concern because of its high debt, limited political willingness to reduce it and student protests that began in late September.

The CAC 40, Paris’s main stock index, has fallen 12% from its August record and may next find support near its March lows.

Germany’s DAX is nearing a key long-term support level around 24,000 points, while the Euro Stoxx 50 has fallen below 6,200 points.

Eurozone inflation rose to 3.8% in September, its highest level in three years, with energy costs cited as the cause.

A rising oil price and a weaker euro could add to inflation because oil is paid for in US dollars.

The article warns that a further fall in European shares could deepen market concerns, while US indexes have continued to reach record highs.
