French inspectors warn of risks in microentrepreneur status
France’s microentrepreneur system makes it easier for people to start a business, with simpler paperwork and tax and social contribution payments.
It was created in 2008, and users must keep their turnover below a limit that varies by line of work.
The number of economically active microentrepreneurs rose from 692,000 in 2013 to 1.765 million in 2022.
The growth has partly been driven by online platforms that rely on this type of worker, including in delivery.
In an assessment published on October 9, France’s finance and social affairs inspectorates said the system also carries risks of insecure work, fraud and lost revenue for the state and social security system.
They said adjustments are needed and raised the question of more fundamental changes to the system.
