Sydney’s Opal Tower declared defect-free after eight years of repairs

The Opal Tower is a 36-storey apartment building in Sydney’s west.

Residents were evacuated on Christmas Eve in 2018 after cracks appeared, and more cracks were found on other floors in the days that followed.

An engineer’s report commissioned by the NSW government said the defects resulted from a mix of design and construction issues, including changes made after the original design.

Repairs and efforts to secure compensation involved years of work, legal cases and millions of dollars.

The building has now been declared defect-free, and owners have been compensated.

Its owners’ corporation says all legal matters are resolved, and the tower now has a 20-year structural warranty.

The incident also led to changes to building standards across New South Wales.
