Magic’s Darkhold card offers a riskier rival to The One Ring
Wizards of the Coast has announced Darkhold Destiny, a new Marvel-themed Magic: The Gathering set scheduled for release in April.
Its centerpiece card, the Darkhold, is a three-mana legendary artifact that requires two black mana to play.
Like The One Ring, it gains counters and can draw more cards each time it is used.
But the Darkhold also makes its owner lose one life for every card in their hand after drawing.
That can make using it increasingly dangerous, especially if the owner keeps a large hand.
When its owner is close to being killed, the Darkhold can bring the whole table down to their level, though the announcement does not describe exactly how that works.
The card is part of an original Marvel story in which Dormammu and Hela use the Darkhold to invade different realms, and the set is due in April.
The Darkhold, a new Magic: The Gathering artifact based on Marvel’s Book of the Damned, draws cards while costing its controller life.
It costs three mana, including two black mana, and gains a sin counter whenever its controller taps it to draw cards.
Each time it is activated, its controller loses one life for every card in their hand.
The card is described as a more dangerous alternative to The One Ring, with an ability that can bring the whole table down to its controller’s level.
The Darkhold is part of the Marvel Universes Beyond set Darkhold Destiny, scheduled for release in April.
