Caramuru CEO says Brazil’s biodiesel sector has room to grow
Marcus Thieme, CEO of Brazilian food company Caramuru Alimentos, says the country’s biodiesel sector has room to grow.
He says ethanol blending has advanced further, while biodiesel remains below market expectations.
Tests are examining a move from B15 to B17, meaning a higher share of biodiesel in the fuel blend, and studies are also looking at B20.
Thieme expects the tests to be completed next year.
He says gradual changes could give companies more confidence to invest and produce more biodiesel.
The fuel is made from soybean oil, one of the products created when soybeans are processed.
Caramuru makes both cooking oil and biodiesel from soy.
Caramuru executive Marcus Thieme said Brazil’s biodiesel sector has significant room to grow.
He said tests are under way on a gradual move from B15 to B17, with studies also considering B20.
Thieme expects the tests to be completed next year and said a gradual increase would provide greater regulatory security for investors.
He said soy processing produces about 70% meal and 20% oil, which can be used for food or biodiesel.
Caramuru produces cooking oils under the Sinhá brand and also makes biodiesel.
