CSN agrees to sell German steel plant for €550 million

Brazilian steelmaker CSN has agreed to sell its German steel plant, Stahlwerk Thüringen, known as SWT, to Spain’s Bipadosa for €550 million.

Bipadosa controls the Spanish steel group Megasa.

SWT can produce 1.1 million tonnes of long steel products each year and has been owned by CSN since 2012.

CSN says the potential sale is part of its plan to reduce debt.

At the end of June, the company had net debt of R$42.1 billion and debt equal to 3.49 times its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation.

The agreement gives the parties up to ten weeks of exclusivity to complete definitive documents.

CSN is also pursuing a sale of its cement business, but that process has taken longer than the company expected.
