Axel REE plans testing and studies at its Brazilian rare earths project
Axel REE, an Australian company, is developing the Caladão rare earths and gallium project in Brazil.
In late September, it reported an updated resource of 708.6 million tonnes of rare earths and 575.7 million tonnes of gallium-bearing material.
The updated figures were 24% higher for rare earths and 31% higher for gallium than before.
The gallium resource is described as Brazil’s only known defined primary gallium resource.
Axel plans to test a method called in-situ recovery at the Woolrich deposit, which avoids open-pit mining by extracting minerals underground.
The company says this method could have lower costs and environmental impacts than conventional mining, but it must first complete more testing and hydrogeological work.
Gallium testing, environmental studies and early permitting work will also contribute to a scoping study planned for next year.

The company selected the Woolrich deposit for a controlled in-situ recovery field validation program.
The program will be designed after leach optimisation progresses and planned hydrogeological work is complete.
Axel will also conduct metallurgical testwork on the gallium mineralisation.
Results will feed into a scoping study next year, alongside baseline environmental studies and early permitting activities.
- Who
- Axel REE, an Australian-listed company.
- What
- It plans in-situ recovery testing, gallium metallurgical testwork and studies at its Caladão project.
- When
- The company reported the resource update in late September. A scoping study is planned for next year.
- Where
- The Caladão project in Brazil, with Woolrich selected for the field validation program.
- Why
- The work is intended to advance and de-risk the project and inform a scoping study.
This story does not have two clearly opposing sides.
The competitive advantage that we have is we have a huge resource base and it’s also based in Brazil which is a stable mining jurisdiction.
The key advantage of this method is there’s no open pit mining required.
Axel reported an updated indicated and inferred resource for the Caladão project.
Managing director Patience Mpofu discussed the project at a webinar.
Results from the planned work are expected to feed into a scoping study.
