Woman found dead in a sack in Istanbul, daughter also missing

In January 1973, fishermen found a tied sack in the Bosphorus off Kireçburnu, Istanbul, with a woman's body inside.

The woman had been strangled, and investigators identified her as 67-year-old Nuriye Hanım through a scar from an earlier operation.

Nuriye and her daughter Meyla, who lived together in Beyoğlu, had both been missing for several days.

The two women were known in Istanbul's wealthy social circles and had Syrian origins.

Police suspected that Meyla might also have been killed, but searches for her body found no result.

Investigators questioned people who had seen the women and examined their home as they tried to establish what happened before they disappeared.
