French restaurant group seeks lower meal-voucher limit in supermarkets

French restaurant group seeks lower meal-voucher limit in supermarkets

French lawmakers began examining a bill on meal-voucher rules on October 12.

The vouchers can be used in restaurants and, since 2022, in shops such as supermarkets.

The restaurant group UMIH wants a daily limit of €25 in restaurants and €10 in shops.

It says nearly six in ten vouchers are now spent outside restaurants and cites an estimate of €2 billion in lost revenue for the sector.

UMIH argues that restaurants support jobs and local economies, while also saying that only one in five employees receives meal vouchers.

Its proposal is intended to steer more voucher spending back to restaurants, but it does not guarantee that customers will return.

Parliament is examining the proposed law, and the available information does not say what decision lawmakers will make.
