Beetaloo Basin begins first commercial gas deliveries in Australia

Australia’s Beetaloo Basin has begun making its first commercial natural gas deliveries to the Northern Territory.

The basin is a shale gas field, and companies are using drilling and fracking methods developed in the United States.

Efforts to develop it faced a fracking moratorium in the Northern Territory from 2016 to 2018, followed by a downturn in exploration during the COVID-19 pandemic.

American investor Bryan Sheffield and companies including Tamboran Resources and Daly Waters Energy helped fund the project.

Several American oilfield service companies with shale experience also invested or took on work connected to the basin.

The first sales show that Beetaloo can produce gas, but the companies still need to prove it can be profitable over the long term.

The project matters because Australia may face gas shortfalls as some offshore fields decline, and five wells are now ramping up.
