40 CHP mayors arrested in Turkey since 2024 local elections
Forty mayors from Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party, or CHP, have been arrested since the March 2024 local elections.
The figure includes mayors who have since been released, so it is not the number currently in prison.
The arrests span cities and districts across Turkey, including İstanbul, Ankara, İzmir and Antalya.
Officials face allegations including bribery, bid-rigging, abuse of office and links to terrorist organizations, but an arrest or pretrial detention does not establish guilt.
The cases have affected municipalities the CHP won in 2024, when it finished ahead of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s ruling party nationwide.
Some elected mayors have been suspended or removed, and the government has appointed trustees in some municipalities.
In Ataşehir, the city council was scheduled to choose a new acting mayor on October 10 after the acting mayor was arrested.
