French budget debate begins as government borrowing costs remain high

France’s National Assembly is beginning to examine the government’s 2027 budget.

The debate is taking place while financial markets are closely watching the country’s public finances.

Interest rates on 10-year French government bonds were 4.84% on October 12, after nearing 5% on October 8.

They remain at their highest level since 2002, although they briefly reached a similar peak in June 2008.

Investors are also following how lawmakers handle the budget and what measures they propose.

Economist Paul Krugman has warned that France’s budget path is not sustainable, pointing to high deficits and the failure to reform the pension system.

The budget examination is now under way, with financial markets watching its progress.
