Trans Nzoia women leaders warn political tensions could threaten peace

Women leaders from Maendeleo Ya Wanawake in Trans Nzoia, Kenya, say rising political tensions could threaten peace in the county.

They cite ethnic rhetoric, alleged transfers of voters and claims that non-residents are being registered to vote.

The leaders want authorities to investigate the voter registration allegations and protect confidence in the 2027 election.

They also called for politicians accused of encouraging ethnic division or using young people to fuel violence to be investigated and prosecuted.

Their concerns come as supporters of Governor George Natembeya and Kenya Kwanza leaders are described as divided.

The leaders condemned Endebess MP Robert Pokose over a reported threat of violence against anyone trying to stop Kenyans living in Uganda from registering as voters.

They say political violence could harm residents, including young people, women and children.
