Hurricane Simon and Tropical Storm Rachel threaten Mexico’s Pacific coast

Mexico’s Pacific coast is facing threats from two storms: Category 4 Hurricane Simon and Tropical Storm Rachel.

Simon was south of Manzanillo, Colima, and moving north, while Rachel was approaching Baja California from the Pacific.

Simon had maximum sustained winds of 240 km/h, and forecasters expected exceptionally heavy rain in parts of Michoacán and Colima.

Rachel had maximum sustained winds of 100 km/h and was moving north-northeast, with strong winds, heavy rain and high waves forecast for Baja California.

Mexican authorities have issued wind warnings and watches for coastal areas in several states.

Rain from both storms could cause landslides, swollen rivers and streams, overflowing waterways and flooding in low-lying areas.

Authorities urged people to follow weather and civil protection notices; no later developments were provided.
